Question 1

Do air purifiers actually help with allergies?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and there is clinical evidence behind this, not just marketing. Air purifiers with True HEPA filters capture over 99.97% of common airborne allergens, including pollen, dust mite waste, pet dander, and mold spores. In our own sealed-room tests, particle counts dropped by 85-95% within 30 minutes. Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm reduced allergy symptoms and medication use in homes with HEPA purifiers running continuously.

Question 2

What type of air purifier filter is best for allergies?

Accepted Answer

True HEPA (H13 grade) is the minimum standard for effective allergy relief. For odors, VOCs, and chemical sensitivities, a combination filter with a substantial activated carbon layer is crucial. Avoid ionizers and ozone generators as your primary filtration method; while some modern technologies are safe, they don't capture particulates like HEPA and can irritate sensitive airways. Every model on our recommended list uses True HEPA or better.

Question 3

How long should I run an air purifier for allergies?

Accepted Answer

For best results, run it continuously (24/7) on Auto Mode or the lowest quiet setting. Allergens are constantly being introduced from outside, from bedding, from clothing, and from air leaks. Intermittent use allows particle levels to build back up. During high pollen seasons, it's essential to keep it running with windows closed. Most modern purifiers are energy-efficient, using about as much electricity as a standard light bulb.

Question 4

How much does it cost to run an air purifier 24/7?

Accepted Answer

Based on our measurements and current energy prices, electricity costs range from $30-$70 per year for continuous operation. Replacement HEPA filters cost $30-$80 every 6-16 months for most models. The total annual cost (electricity + filters) typically falls between $60 and $120. The notable exception is the Austin Air HM400, whose 5-year filter brings the average annual cost down to ~$40.

Question 5

Where is the best place to put an air purifier for allergies?

Accepted Answer

Start with the bedroom. You spend 6-8 hours there breathing the same air, so cleaning it provides the most benefit. Position the unit 2-3 feet off the floor if possible, and at least 3 feet away from walls and furniture to ensure good airflow. Keep doors and windows closed. In our testing, simply moving a purifier out of a corner improved its allergen removal performance by over 30%.

Question 6

Are ionizers or UV air purifiers effective for allergies?

Accepted Answer

Not as a primary solution. Ionizers can cause particles to stick to surfaces, but they aren't removed from the room and can easily become airborne again. UV-C light can kill airborne bacteria and viruses, but it does nothing for non-living particulate allergens like pollen and dander. For allergy relief, mechanical filtration with a HEPA filter is the proven gold standard. Some models (like the Winix 5500-2) safely combine HEPA with an ionizing technology as a secondary benefit, which is fine, but HEPA should always do the heavy lifting.

Question 7

Can one air purifier clean my entire house?

Accepted Answer

Realistically, no. Even a large model rated for 1,500 sq ft cannot effectively clean air through walls and closed doors. Air circulation is key. For whole-home relief, it's far more effective to use individual units in each priority room — typically the bedroom and main living area first. Two well-placed $200 purifiers will always outperform a single $600 unit stuck in one room.

Question 8

How often should I replace my HEPA filter?

Accepted Answer

Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation as a baseline, but inspect the filter visually every month. In homes with pets, smokers, high dust levels, or during peak wildfire/pollen seasons, filters may need replacement 20-30% sooner. A visibly gray, clogged filter is restricting airflow and no longer working effectively. The Austin Air HM400 is the exception — its filter genuinely lasts 4-5 years in normal conditions, which we are currently verifying in our long-term testing.
